The Income Tax Department Recruitment 2026 is a good opportunity for meritorious sportspersons who want to get a Central Government job through the sports quota. The Office of the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Odisha has invited applications for 12 vacancies for Tax Assistant, Stenographer Grade-II and Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS).

This recruitment is especially useful for candidates who have represented their State, University or Country in recognised sports competitions and have the required educational qualification. Depending on the post, candidates with 10th, 12th or Graduation can apply. The department has also prescribed specific sports achievements and valid sports certificates for eligibility. 

The application process is offline. Candidates have to fill the prescribed application form and send it through Registered Post/Speed Post to the Income Tax Department office in Bhubaneswar. Tax Assistant

There are 7 vacancies for Tax Assistant. The post comes under Pay Level-4 with a pay scale of ₹25,500 to ₹81,100. Candidates need a Bachelor’s Degree and must also meet the prescribed data entry speed requirement. 

Stenographer Grade-II

There is 1 vacancy for Stenographer Grade-II. This is also a Pay Level-4 post with a pay scale of ₹25,500 to ₹81,100. Candidates must have passed Class 12 and fulfil the prescribed stenography skill requirements. 

Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS)

There are 4 vacancies for MTS. This post comes under Pay Level-1 with a pay scale of ₹18,000 to ₹56,900. The basic educational requirement is 10th pass from a recognised board. 

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates should carefully check both the educational qualification and sports eligibility before sending their application. This is not a regular recruitment open to all candidates; applicants must fulfil the prescribed meritorious sportsperson criteria as well. 

Educational Qualification

Age Relaxation

Sports persons may get relaxation in the upper age limit as per the applicable Government rules:

  • General sportspersons: Up to 5 years
  • SC/ST sportspersons: Up to 10 years

This relaxation is available only when the candidate fulfils the other eligibility conditions and provides the required sports eligibility certificate in the prescribed format. 

Sports Eligibility

This is the most important part of this recruitment. Candidates must have the required sports achievement/participation in eligible competitions.

The notification considers candidates who have represented the State or Country in recognised National/International competitions, or candidates meeting the specified criteria through Junior Nationals, Khelo India Youth Games, Khelo India Winter Games, Khelo India Para Games, Khelo India University Games, SGFI, Inter-University competitions or National School Games

The notification includes 65 eligible sports disciplines, including Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Yogasana and several others. 

Important: Only sports achievements/participation up to 31 March 2026 will be considered for this recruitment. Achievements obtained after this date will not be counted. 

Salary / Pay Scale

Selected candidates will receive salary and allowances as per the 7th Central Pay Commission. The recruitment notice also states that other benefits applicable to Central Government employees will be provided as per the rules.

Selection Process

The selection process is based mainly on the candidate’s sports achievements, along with a post-specific skill test wherever applicable.

Tax Assistant and Stenographer Grade-II

For these two posts, the recruitment will be conducted in two phases:

  1. Shortlisting based on sports achievements
  2. Post-specific skill test

For Tax Assistant, candidates up to four times the number of vacancies will be shortlisted for the second phase. For Stenographer Grade-II, 10 candidates will be shortlisted for the skill test. 

The skill test will be conducted at the Office of the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Bhubaneswar. Candidates will have to appear at their own expense. 

MTS

For Multi-Tasking Staff, the recruitment will be conducted in a single phase. Selection will be made through a merit list prepared on the basis of sports achievements.

Sports Achievement Marks

The final merit list will consider the prescribed sports achievement scores, subject to qualifying the required skill test wherever applicable. For example, Olympic/World Championship achievements carry higher scores than School-level sports achievements. 

Important: Candidates must have valid sports certificates issued by the prescribed authorities. Sports certificates from authorities not recognised under the recruitment rules will not be considered.
